Located in Albury-Wodonga, the Circular Plastics facility is a joint venture between Asahi Beverages, Pact Group Holdings Ltd and Cleanaway Waste Management Ltd. Australian company Aerofloat was contracted to design and construct the wastewater treatment system for the project to ensure clean, reusable wash water within the plant and a sustainable end-product.
The project heralds the third venture that Astron Sustainability, a subsidiary of Pact Group, and Aerofloat has worked on together.

Circular Plastics Australia (PET) is leading the charge with the construction of a world-class recycling facility in Victoria, with the Albury-Wodonga facility recycling the equivalent of around one billion 600ml PET bottles annually. The resulting recycled plastic will be used to produce new bottles as well as food and beverage packaging.
Aerofloat’s wastewater treatment plant design ensured a sustainable, long-term solution for Circular Plastics. Clean wastewater from the system is discharged to sewer and has an optional reuse loop to be used within the facility. Aerofloat is working closely with the local council to ensure its strict policies and guidelines around managing microplastics in its inland waterways are met.
Aerofloat installed its patented DAF technology to ensure a mechanically simple and robust solution. The system was designed to meet strict discharge standards set by the local council to remove microplastics from wastewater during the recycling process and treat biological waste.
The system included a complete suite of DAFs to remove solid waste, including an AeroCirc DAF and Aerofloat’s patented AeroDAF 200, as well an MBBR to remove the biological waste. pH correction, turbidity and suspended solid monitoring were included in the final effluent tank, to ensure the highest quality effluent, meaning that any out of spec water was recirculated to the balance tank for further treatment.
Uniquely, a screw press was installed to dewater the sludge containing microplastics. This allowed the dried sludge to be placed in a bin rather than needing to be sucked out by a speciality truck. The excess water from the screw press then goes back into the wastewater treatment plant for further treatment.
