Rawbone Pet Food made its environmental footprint a priority.

A wastewater treatment system from Aerofloat supported Rawbone Pet Food’s commitment to the environment and sustainability.

The Need

Rawbone Pet Food needed to support its natural approach to pet food manufacturing, by meeting environmental obligations with a comprehensive wastewater solution.

The Solution

Aerofloat’s patented dissolved air flotation unit, the AeroDAF 100 with remote monitoring, allowed Rawbone Pet Food to adhere to City West Water’s discharge limits.

The Benefit

Rawbone Pet Food continued to create its well-loved 4Legs branded natural pet food, while maintaining its commitment to the environment.

Background

Rawbone Pet Food is known for its natural approach to pet nutrition. The company produces the award winning 4Legs Pet Food that is healthy and preservative free.

The team behind the brand firmly believe in reducing the environmental footprint its products create, exemplified by its sustainable packaging design and comprehensive recycling systems.

It was important that Rawbone Pet Food adhered to the wastewater discharge limits set out by its local water authority, City West Water in Victoria. The limits needed to be under 600 suspended solids (SS), a pH between 7 and 10 and a final discharge temperature under 38 degrees.

The Aerofloat Solution

Aerofloat was a natural fit when it came to installing a wastewater system that would ensure the business met local water authority regulations and minimise its environmental impact.

Aerofloat installed its patented AeroDAF 100, which treated wastewater at 100 litres per minute at the Rawbone Pet Food factory in Sunshine, Victoria.

The treatment process started at the inlet pumping station, which led to a rotary screen, the Aerofloat balance tank (which included a blower for cooling and mixing) and the AeroDAF 100. Microscopic air bubbles in the AeroDAF 100 attached to flocculated particles of matter and floated them to the surface. The system then automatically pushed the thickened float off the top of the tank, removing the suspended solids and grease from the effluent. Technicians were able to monitor temperature in the inlet pumping station, the balance tank and at discharge, further optimising the performance of the system to ensure the company adhered to the municipality’s strict water guidelines.

Aerofloat’s remote monitoring system at the Rawbone Pet Food plant allowed both Rawbone Pet Food and Aerofloat technicians to be informed of any changes in the system in real time and adjust the settings accordingly.

Results

Testing gave excellent results for the system, with Rawbone Pet Food’s wastewater well within Victoria’s City West Water’s discharge limits.

For Rawbone Pet Food, working with Aerofloat to manage its wastewater ensured the company minimised its environmental impact, adhered to the water authority’s discharge limits – and gave its four-legged friends another reason to be happy.
