Physical Chemical Separation

Physical chemical separation techniques are typically used to remove suspended solids (SS) and fats, oils and grease (FOG) from wastewater.

Aerofloat can assist in incorporating new or existing physical chemical separation equipment or technologies into most of its wastewater treatment processes. The range of equipment options for physical chemical separation include – DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation) products, clarifiers, sedimentation tanks, grease traps and more. Aerofloat can offer a range of DAF products depending on the hydraulic and solids loadings to be treated including its patented AeroDAF, proprietary AeroCirc DAF and the more conventional rectangular DAFs.
Physical chemical separation techniques are typically used to remove suspended fats and proteins which will in turn remove the associated BOD and COD. However, they not used to remove soluble organics (dissolved sugars and proteins). Depending on the nature of the wastewater, upfront aerated balance tanks can assist in some reduction of the soluble BOD and COD of the wastewater.

Relevant products

Aerofloat is known within the industry for its innovative and creative approach to wastewater treatment design. Aerofloat has a number of both in-house proprietary products and off-the-shelf solutions. Below are some details of Aerofloat’s proprietary products.

AeroDAF

Aerofloat’s own patented DAF technology in the AeroDAF was designed to provide a compact, low maintenance and affordable DAF solution and has been successfully applied to numerous plants around the world.

AeroCircDAF

The AeroCIRC DAF is a traditional stainless steel, top scraper, open DAF, however includes some unique design features to enhance maintenance and cleaning of the system.

AeroTrap

The AeroTRAP provides more effective solids settling than a conventional grease trap. This system has been successfully implemented for heavy solids removal as a pre-treatment step or to reduce the load on existing plants or as an automated grease trap option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Physical chemical separation is a process used in wastewater treatment that combines both physical and chemical treatment methods to remove contaminants from wastewater. It is commonly used in food manufacturing (as well as other industries) to remove suspended solids (SS), fats, oils and grease (FOG) from wastewater.

Aerofloat’s DAF (dissolved air flotation) products fall within the physical chemical separation category. Aerofloat’s range of DAFs include different sized AeroDAFs, AeroCIRC DAF, AeroVDAF and conventional rectangular DAFs. Aerofloat engineers select the appropriate DAF product alongside other equipment, depending on the requirements.

Physical chemical separation methods are commonly employed to eliminate suspended solids, fats and proteins, leading to a reduction in both BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand). It’s important to note that these techniques are not suitable for the removal of soluble organic compounds like dissolved sugars and proteins.
