Dairy Wastewater Treatment

Case Study: NORCO Foods

Norco required a more robust wastewater solution to support growth and adhere to council discharge requirements.

The presence of whey as a common by-product of the milk and cheese manufacturing processes means dairy wastewater treatment can be challenging.

Aerofloat has extensive experience in the dairy industry and can custom design a dairy wastewater treatment plant to effectively meet regulatory requirements. Aerofloat designs the most economic and practical solution for you following analysis of your manufacturing processes, wastewater patterns, and the local authority discharge requirements.

This may mean recommending only partial flow treatment, whey capture and discharge, physical separation to remove the associated suspended matter contributing to the BOD, or a full biological treatment solution.

While Aerofloat has the expertise, experience and opportunity to offer a variety of products for its dairy wastewater treatment plants, it also has a series of innovative in-house patented technology options. Typically the patented dissolved air flotation (AeroDAF) and patent-pending moving bed biofilm reactor (AeroMBBR), will form the basis of the dairy wastewater treatment plant design. The AeroDAF is a unique dissolved air flotation product that is compact, sealed and has a patented scum removal process – eliminating the need for traditional mechanical scrapers. The AeroDAF will remove the majority of the suspended solids (SS) and fats, oils and grease (FOG) in the wastewater. The AeroMBBR uses a proven treatment technique but includes a patent-pending removal aeration system which minimises maintenance and eliminates downtime seen in traditional systems. The AeroMBBR is a biological system used to remove soluble contaminants from dairy industry wastewater.

The unique designs of these two systems, combined with Aerofloat’s in-house knowledge of chemical flocculation and biological treatment processes, ensures Aerofloat’s systems work effectively to meet and or exceed contaminant discharge standards.

Aerofloat has a range of products to ensure effective dairy wastewater treatment.

Reduce your BOD, COD,
SS and FOG

Most food manufacturers aim to filter suspended solids (SS) and fats, oils and grease (FOG) from their wastewater. In the dairy industry, biological treatment methods may be required to remove the soluble lactose and proteins through dairy wastewater treatment, which contribute to the BOD and chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels.

Patented technology for the
dairy industry

Aerofloat’s patented AeroDAF and AeroMBBR are well suited to the dairy industry. Both provide low-maintenance, effective solutions for dairy wastewater treatment.

Following production increase, Australian farmer-owned dairy cooperative, Norco, sought to upgrade its existing treatment facility on the Gold Coast.

Norco required a more robust wastewater solution to support growth and adhere to council discharge requirements. Aerofloat installed a solution utilising physical separation plus biological treatment with AeroDAFs and AeroMBBRs.
